The NY division of 'Children's Defense Fund: Annual Beat the Odds' was held yesterday in the city honoring outstanding students who have overcome tremendous difficulties to achieve academic excellence. Supported by A-list celebs like Tommy Hilfiger, Soledad O' Brien, Selita Ebanks, John Delucie, Soledad O'Brien, Todd English, Harry Belafonte, Ali Wentworth and Maurice DuBois the selected students were honored and awarded a scholarship.
The event is usually held in 7 cities, the LA chapter being highly celebrated largely due to celebrity involvement. Beats the Odds event were started 20 years ago by the now President and Founder of the organization Marian Wright Edelman. The annual event awards $10,000 scholarships, plus additional support, to exceptional high school students who have overcome adversity to succeed.
